A Clovis safety professional has petitioned the Cal/OSH Standards Board for a revision to the General Industry Safety Orders (GISO) that would exempt ladders and stairways from a requirement for railings.David W. Smith, of Ensign Safety & Health Advisory, says an optional provision in GISO 3210(b) for railings at the entrances to ladderways and stairways could pose a safety hazard.
