Despite a then-booming economy and record employment, the number of workers who died on the job in California last year was down significantly from the previous year, according to the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).The state suffered 553 on-the-job deaths in 2000, a decrease of 8 percent.
