Crane Safety, Israeli-Style

California has an enviable record when it comes to tower crane safety, thanks to steps Cal/OSHA took after a deadly 1989 crane collapse in San Francisco. But crane operators here never had to face the kinds of hazards faced by their counterparts in Israel.

In the accompanying video, you will see how crane operators in Israel protect themselves during rocket attacks, a common occurrence even before the current war in Israel. Because of the short distance between Gaza and most of Israel, there is only 15 to 30 seconds between the warning and the potential hit from an incoming rocket.

It is remarkable how calmly the operator here dons his protective gear in the face of an impending rocket as air raid sirens blare. The rocket hit nearby and the crane operator was uninjured.

As the saying goes, you default to your training.
