Violence in Riverside City Hall

Joseph Neale, a postal employee and six-hour-a-week city recreation chess coach, opened fire with a 9-millimeter handgun in a Riverside City Hall conference room shortly before 8 a.m. on October 6. The mayor and two council members were wounded, along with two police officers, before Neale himself was shot and wounded by police.Neale, known as "The Chessman," coached chess form 1986 until dismissed in 1994.
