August Was Not a Good Month – for Highway or Refinery Work

On August 16 at 8:15 a.m., two employees of Safety Lanes Co. of Benicia, working under contract for Caltrans, were struck by a suspected drunken driver. Gary Hutchenson, 40 had to have his leg amputated; Nathan Thomas, 25, was in fair condition, the hospital reported at the time.The two men were working on the right shoulder of I-680 near Walnut Creek.
