California Workplace Deaths Down in ’99

Despite a booming economy and an expanding workforce, on-the-job fatalities in California were down last year. The state suffered 591 workplace deaths in 1999, down almost 6 percent from the previous year, according to data recently released as part of the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS') Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries Summary.California's 1999 fatalities represented 9.8 percent of the national total of 6,023.
