SAN FRANCISCO - On December 15, 1997, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision that strengthens the ability of trial judges to rule out "opinion evidence" even if proffered by experts. The justices upheld an Atlanta federal judge's decision to dismiss before trial a lawsuit filed by a 37-year-old electrician with lung cancer. In General Electric v. Joiner, 96-188, Robert K.
