Drycleaning Industry To Study Cancer Risk From Perchloroethylene (2)

The Halogenated Solvents Industry Alliance (HSIA), which represents the drycleaning industry, is sponsoring an epidemiological study of workers in Scandinavia exposed to the solvent perchloroethylene to assess whether they have an increased risk of cancer.

Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland were chosen for the study because of the availability of comprehensive employment and medical records. The study is expected to cover 7,000 drycleaning workers from the 1970 census, which will provide 30 years of medical follow-up and reduces the potential for exposure to other cleaning solvents used prior to that time," HSIA noted.
