Davis Appoints Union Business Manager as Labor Commissioner

Gov. Gray Davis has appointed the only female union business manager in the nation to be the new state Labor Commissioner. Marcy V. Saunders, 49, will serve as the chief of the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE). The post requires state Senate confirmation.Saunders has been business manager of the Building and Construction Trades Council of San Mateo County since 1993. "She is the only woman to be elected to such a position in the United States," the governor's office noted.
