SPOKANE - Acts of workplace violence account for a small but significant subset of disabling injuries. Although employers reported 20,000 disabling workplace assaults in 1994 to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and 22,400 in 1992, the full extent of such incidents is not known. The BLS survey covers only a sample of private employers. There is much better information about workplace fatalities, thanks to the annual Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI).
